Consultant Ophthalmologist & Lifestyle Medicine Physician
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my practice. I look forward to meeting you and working together to understand how your lifestyle can help protect and improve your vision.
I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist with over a decade of experience, having held my consultant post since 2014. My clinical expertise spans general ophthalmology, medical retina, and cataract surgery.
Alongside my NHS practice, I am also a licensed Lifestyle Medicine Physician — a discipline that focuses on how factors such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress management can influence health and disease. I believe that combining these two areas of expertise gives my patients a truly integrated approach to their eye health.
Having spent years seeing patients with conditions like diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and inflammatory eye disease, I became increasingly aware that lifestyle plays a significant role in how these conditions develop and progress.
I am a firm believer in the power of preventative health. Too often in medicine, we wait until a condition has significantly progressed before taking action. Many serious eye conditions can be influenced by the choices we make every day. My goal is to work with patients proactively — to slow progression, reduce risk, and where possible, improve outcomes.
Conditions
My private consultations can benefit patients with a wide range of eye conditions where lifestyle factors play a meaningful role in their progression and management. These commonly include, but are not limited to:
Research increasingly shows that diet, smoking, cardiovascular health, and UV exposure can all influence how quickly AMD progresses. Early lifestyle intervention can make a real difference.
Blood sugar control, diet, exercise, and weight management are all critical factors in slowing progression and protecting your vision long term.
Exercise, diet, sleep position, stress management, and cardiovascular health can all influence intraocular pressure and optic nerve health — a valuable complement to conventional management.
Diet, stress, sleep, and gut health all play a role in modulating the body's inflammatory response, which can significantly influence uveitis and related conditions.
CSC is strongly associated with stress and elevated cortisol levels. Stress management, sleep quality, and lifestyle modification are central to managing and preventing recurrence.
Hypertension and high cholesterol can lead to retinal vein occlusion, artery occlusion, and hypertensive retinopathy. Lifestyle medicine sits at the heart of managing these risk factors.
Even without a diagnosis, a lifestyle medicine consultation can help you understand your risk factors and take proactive steps to protect your vision for the future.
Lifestyle Medicine
Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based approach that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions to prevent, treat, and manage chronic disease. When applied to eye health, it focuses on key pillars that we know influence how conditions develop and progress.
A diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and leafy greens can protect the retina, reduce inflammation, and support healthy blood vessels in the eye.
Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, regulates blood sugar and blood pressure, and has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients.
Poor sleep increases inflammation, elevates cortisol, and impairs tissue repair — all of which can negatively affect eye health.
Chronic stress triggers inflammatory pathways that can worsen eye conditions. Mindfulness, breathing techniques, and lifestyle change can have a measurable impact.
Smoking is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for AMD and is also associated with increased risk of uveitis, cataracts, and optic nerve damage. Limiting alcohol and other harmful substances further protects your eye health.
Strong relationships and an active social life reduce stress, lower inflammation, and support better mental wellbeing — all of which benefit eye health. Connected patients are also more likely to stay motivated, attend appointments, and maintain healthy lifestyle changes that protect their vision.
